The Kickass Guide to Reading a Book Every Week

And how to retain the information…

Let’s be honest: We don’t read as much as we would like

A constant “resolution” or “goal” of mine involves reading X amount of books in Y amount of time.

I never hit that goal.

Life gets in the way, other things crop up, distractions are endless…it’s tough to read consistently and deliberately.

So how can we change this pattern of not reading?

Only one way: Building the habit.

We can build the habit of reading daily by implementing a few key tricks:

  • Enhance Your Environment: Wherever you have other habits in your house, such as rooms with T.V.s, place a book next to the remote or controller. Odds are, if you still have willpower in your day, you can knock out a few pages.
  • Start Small: Tell yourself you will read for 1 minute every day. That’s it. I’m willing to bet you’ll read for more than 1 minute. Barriers of resistance are nonexistent when you have to read for 60 seconds.
  • Pick Two Different Books: One fiction and one nonfiction. Put your fiction book next to your nightstand (fiction helps you unwind from the day) and put your self help/biography/social issues book on audiobook for your commute. This keeps ideas fresh and cuts down on wasted time.

The average person reads 250 words per minute — essentially a page a minute. Most books range from 64,000 to 80,000 words, meaning a book takes 4.25 to 5.33 hours to complete. That means 45 minutes every day should be ample amount of time to finish a book per week.

And if one day you miss out on some reading, don’t worry about it — we’re human. Don’t take it as a sign to stop reading forever. Tomorrow is a new day — and a new chapter.

Stay wealthy and read!
