92 Days Away: I Can’t Wait to Sleep Around the World…

Anything more than 6 hours is a luxury at this point

I miss quality sleep…and Amelia’s Espresso & Panini

This is a daily documentation of my adventure from Hillsboro, Oregon to Cape Town, South Africa on September 16th, 2017.

Day 9, gonna make it mine!

Despite going to sleep at 3 AM this morning, which prompted what could be the Guinness Book World Record for “longest time for getting my ass out of bed” this morning, I feel good.

If my previously-mentioned dream schedule actually comes to fruition, then I should average 7.5 hours of sleep, which would be ideal. For now, I need to find a way to shut off my monkey brain and fall asleep at a reasonable hour.

There’s no doubt a Medium article for that.

Sleep will be pivotal when I become a digital nomad. I want to be in pique physical form when traveling for the ‘Gram [Instagram], I need energy for my writing and other projects, and it will keep me healthy overall, which is huge when I’m traveling abroad.

My last international endeavor was a week-long vacation-style trip to the Dominican Republic. It was incredibly warm and sunny, relaxing, and one of those days was actually worth the trip out of the United States. But damn, Jess was sicker than sick! I tried to stay healthy and avoid getting what she had, but at the end of the trip, United Airlines (yes, that United Airlines) had other plans.

Long story — and I mean looooong story — short, I got sick as hell too. It is the worst thing, to be sick while traveling. For one, you don’t get to enjoy the full experience you are having. For another, everything you hate about airports and airplanes and airlines are way worse when you have a pounding head and horrible digestion problems.

Travel isn’t always pretty, boys and girls.

So I have to develop great traveling health habits for September, when Jess and I go to South Africa. Here are a few of them:

  • Hydrate: I now have a 40 oz. Hydroflask, so I will be drinking 3–4 of those bad boys every day.
  • Body Weight Exercises: I am a huge proponent of weightlifting, but it’s tough when you’re on the go. My twice-a-week routine will include push-ups, pull-ups, squats, and more. I just have to keep challenging myself.
  • Intermittent Fasting: Something that is now a habit for me, I don’t eat for the first 4–6 hours of the day, giving my body a break from digesting food. I.F. helps me be mentally sharp, boosts my metabolism, and keeps the gut off.
  • SLEEP: This one shouldn’t be a problem once over there. I don’t even get jet lag. I’m ready to get some awesome shut-eye!

I just have to remember, a healthy life is a happy life.

“Travel is no more than a relatively healthy form of narcotic, after all.” -Andrzej Stasiuk
